Richard Wright’s incendiary, gutting novel of African American rage, fear, pain, and persecution is turned into a potboiler of a film noir in this dark and disturbing version. In a rare twist, the author himself plays the lead character Bigger Thomas, a chauffeur who accidentally kills the daughter of the progressive white family that he works for and goes on the run with tragic results.
