Laura Lima is a contemporary artist who lives and works in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Since the 1990s, Lima focused on the matter of aliveness in her installations and events. In her talk she will share her artistic practice with a focus on her approaches to human-animal relations and biodiversity. Following her talk, curator Pedro Alonzo will also be in conversation with the artist.

About Laura Lima

Working across many mediums, Laura Lima (b. 1971, (Minas Gerais, Brazil) explores social relations and the way in which human behavior alters our perception of the everyday. For her 2023 solo exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art of Barcelona titled Balé Literal, she installed a massive hanging mobile made of objects, machinery, paintings, and various artefacts. As if a living organism, the installation danced around the public space in continuous, choreographic movement. Lima graduated with a degree in Philosophy at the State University of Rio de Janeiro and studied at the Visual Arts School of Parque Lage in Rio de Janeiro. Lima is a co-founder and partner of the Galeria de Artes A Gentil Carioca in downtown Rio de Janeiro with Marcio Botner and Ernesto Neto. Lima was the recipient of the BACA Prize (2014), was awarded the Marcantonio Vilaça Prize (2006) and was nominated for the Francophone Prize (2011) and the Han Nefkens Prize (2012).

About Pedro Alonzo

Pedro Alonzo is a Boston-based independent curator who specializes in ambitious public art projects. Since 2006 he has specialized in producing exhibitions that transcend the boundaries of museum walls and spill out into the urban landscape, addressing audiences beyond the traditional museum public.
