The Greater Boston Vintage Society (GBVS) has ‘enlisted’ the 19-piece Compaq Big Band to help take you back in time to a bygone era – and certainly a different climate than mid-winter New England! Think warm breezes, palm trees, tiki drinks, and authentic Swing Era music of the day to transport you to the Officers’ Club at the United States Army Air Forces’ Hickam Field on the island of Oahu, Hawaii on the night of Saturday December 6, 1941.
That’s what’s in store on Saturday night February 7th at the 1940s USO Vintage Dance presented as just ONE part of a FANTASTIC 4-DAY weekend that is the GBVS’ ‘Nor’easter Island Tropical Weekend’.
The venue is the Sturbridge Host Hotel & Conference center located at 366 Main Street in Sturbridge, MA (only one hour west of Boston – close to the I-90/I-84 interchange). Plenty of free parking and on-site/nearby food options.
The band plays 9:00pm-11:00pm, and there’s an introductory, group-friendly swing lesson at 8:00pm. Singles, couples, groups, meetups, and dancers of all abilities welcome!
Dance-only admission is $25pp. Online purchase of dance-only tickets and full weekend activities packages encouraged by going to www.noreasterisland.com in advance. Dance-only walk-ins as space permits.
Vintage attire is encouraged – but not required.
Fronting the band that evening will be ultra-talented Boston area jazz vocalist Elizabeth Embser. She and the ensemble will be performing a ton of swing, with some charts for other dance steps sprinkled in from The Billboard’s top tune lists of the 1930s and early 1940s.
