It’s summertime, my Boston friends. Soak up the sun and plan a little day trip getaway to one of these 13 beaches outside the city using the MBTA Commuter Rail. Pack some sunscreen and get ready for a sandy adventure. Don't forget to take advantage of the $10 MBTA Commuter Rail Weekend Pass, which offers unlimited rides on Saturdays, Sundays, and holiday weekends for just $10.

Note: These destinations are just a short ride away from the closest MBTA station. Take a ~15 minute rideshare with friends and family, hop on a bike, walk, or consider other eco-friendly options after taking the Commuter Rail.
1) Front Beach
Where: Rockport
Closest Commuter Rail Station: Rockport
Info: Rockport is one of the most iconic coastal towns in MA that is easily accessible through the Newbury/Rockport Line. Spend the afternoon on this popular and quiet beach that’s right next to the downtown area. Once you get hungry or need a break from the sun, explore the shops in the area.
2) Back Beach

Info: Hop on the Newbury/Rockport Line and you’ll find just across the way from Front Beach is Rockport’s Back Beach. This rockier coastline is great for a stroll and is prized for its scuba diving treasures.
3) Pebble Beach

Info: Take the Newbury/Rockport Line and hop on over to this beach which is covered in, you guessed it, pebbles. Folks love the sound of the waves as the water hits these smooth rocks. Take a stroll at this beach if you’re looking for a peaceful retreat.

Closest Commuter Rail Station: Gloucester
Info: Good Harbor Beach is one of the most popular destinations off the Newbury/Rockport Line. Come to this spot at low tide and take a stroll to the little Salt Island off the coast. People love the white sand, the views of the mansion, and clear water.

Info: A chilly plunge awaits you after taking the Newbury/Rockport Line. Folks love the way the ocean sings as it hits the golden sand. Just a quick note that there is a $10 walk on fee to enter during the summer, but it’s free off-season.

Info: This clean, beautiful beach is a favorite off the Newbury/Rockport Line, especially since it’s the site of conservation efforts and the home of nesting piping plovers. The shoreline runs for miles and you can take a short walk on the sand dune trails too.
7) Lynn/Nahant Beach Reservation (Long Beach)

Info: Hop on the Newbury/Rockport Line and make your way to Dane Street Beach. This spot is small but quaint. You’ll be able to see North Salem and you’ll have access to a park right next door. Walk down the street to visit the sandy shores of Independence Park and learn about the history of the navy.
10) Devereux Beach
Where: Marblehead

Info: All aboard the Newbury/Rockport Line! Head to this beach in the heart of Marblehead for a calming escape. The shoreline is rocky and perfect for hunting for the best fun-shaped stones and colorful seaglass. There are shaded picnic tables and a playground for everyone to enjoy.
11) Nantasket Beach

Info: Nantasket Beach, right off the Greenbush Line, is a popular destination for those who live in the city and are looking to get away. There’s always “a place in the sun for everyone” at this South Shore beach that stretches for a mile long and boasts beautiful tide pools that reflect vivid sunsets.
12) Bathing Beach
Where: Hingham
Closest Commuter Rail Station: West Hingham
Info: The Greenbush Line can take you to Bathing Beach where you can relax in the green areas of the park and take a stroll along the rocky sand. Spot some horseshoe crabs and soak in the views of Hingham Harbor.
13) Peggotty Beach
Where: Scituate
Closest Commuter Rail Station: Greenbush
Info: Peggotty Beach lies in the city of Scituate, “the most Irish town in America.” Take the Greenbush Line and explore this half-mile of sand. The surrounding small town is charming and perfect for exploration too.
