WOLVERINES! Ha ha, just kidding, that's the OTHER Swayze vehicle with "Dawn" in the title. This one's the gorgeously-shot, syrup-paced post-apocalyptic crypto-western co-starring Swayze's then-wife and god-tier character actor Brion James.
CRYPTO-WESTERN, you're asking? That's right, this is a spiritual remake of "SHANE," the acclaimed early-50's western, itself the first film to be shown in widescreen AND the beginning (some say) of graphic violence in Hollywood productions. You know what else was a spiritual remake of "Shane?" "LOGAN" WAS. (Y'KNOW. THE ONE WITH WOLVERINE IN IT. JUST like in Red Dawn. Film is a flat circle.)
STEEL DAWN, if you need any more coercion to decide to come, begins with a scintillating ten-minute montage of Swayze high-kicking sand-tunneling mutants in the gob, ends with a well-earned revenge murder, and contains ZERO GUNS. Repeat, this is a FUTURISTIC SWORD-BASED WESTERN. All this AND its recurring spiritual motif is a solemn headstand. Seriously, there's no room here for equivocation, we'll see you on Tuesday.
