Somerville Songwriter Sessions at the Armory Cafe presents contemporary folk singer/songwriters in concert, on the first Saturday of each month. The Armory Cafe features live music in an intimate setting, a menu featuring sandwiches, soups, desserts and coffees, and plenty of free parking. Our 6/1 performers:

Called "one of New England's best songwriters" by The Boston Globe, award-winning folksinger/guitarist Terry Kitchen performs songs that are portraits of ordinary people and emotions, captured with extraordinary compassion, honesty and humor. He's been performing on folk stages across the country since the 1990s, releasing ten CDs, including his latest, Rubies in the Dust, which has been heard across the U.S and Canada while reaching #23 on the national Folk-DJ chart. His songs have won the Mid-Atlantic and USA Song Contests and been runner-up in the John Lennon Song Contest, and his song "Enjoy It While It Lasts" reached #8 on Folk-DJ. In the 1980s he was the leader of the groundbreaking Boston band Loose Ties, whose experiences he recounts in his novel Next Big Thing, called "a great debut novel" by The San Francisco Book Review. Kerrville Folk Festival's "New Folk"-winning songwriter and performer Amy Kucharik energizes swing dance, folk festival and listening room audiences alike. Drawing from blues, folk and vaudeville traditions and with a street-smart stagecraft honed in the subways of Boston, Amy transports her audience to a place both timeless and familiar, but nevertheless innovative. She tours and performs as a one-woman band with ukulele, foot percussion, mouth trumpet and harmonica, or with her Boston-based bands Friends With Benefits and Tiger Moan. Combining poignant, witty lyricism and infectious, danceable swing, Amy's music has drawn comparisons to Maria Muldaur, Lake Street Dive, and Anais Mitchell. Amy was a formal showcase artist at the Southwest Regional Folk Alliance in 2015, the NERFA DJ showcase in 2016, and was selected as a Falcon Ridge Folk Festival Emerging Artist in 2018. Her second album Until the Words Are Gone was released worldwide in 2018. More on Amy at www.amykucharik.com.

With elements of Americana, folk, country, and blues, singer/songwriter Kirsten Manville creates songs that feel like they may have come straight from journal entries. Deceptively simple lyrics paint pictures, tell stories, and evoke a range of emotions. From the pain of finding and losing love, and hard times in a down-on-its-luck town, to the small pleasures of line-dried laundry and homemade pie, and the escapism of a romantic night for two, Kirsten’s warm and sultry voice draws the listener in, infusing the songs with feeling and depth. Her latest album Some People Sing was a Top 5 album pick in Metronome Magazine, and Kirsten was featured on the cover of the magazine in March 2018. Her song "...but Down" was included in the Alternate Root Magazine's weekly top 10 in November of 2017. Kirsten performs regularly in the Northeast, and has had the honor of opening for well-known folk artists Don White and Joe Jencks. More on Kirsten at kirstenmanville.com.
