Tiny Fossils: What Microbes + Minerals Reveal about the Environment

Featuring Dr. Tanja Bosak, Associate Professor
MIT Department of Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Sciences

Thursday, May 23rd from 6:30pm-8pm at Aeronaut Brewery

Limestone and silica-rich rocks preserve a long record of life on Earth, including 80% of the time when nearly all life was microscopic. The upcoming Mars 2020 rover mission will also look for the signs of early life on Mars and has to select samples that are most likely to preserve a record of early microbial life. However, to find tiny fossils, we need a lot of luck, old sediments that have not been exposed to very high pressures or temperatures, and a knowledge about how and why different minerals and rocks preserve fossils. We learn about all this by comparing the known fossil record of microbes on the early Earth and fossilizing modern microbes in the laboratory. This gives us a set of search patterns to apply when looking for life elsewhere and interpreting signals of microbial evolution in deep time.
