To celebrate Earth Day, Net Impact Boston (NIB) wants to make a deep and sustained impact in the community. In collaboration with the City of Cambridge, NIB is hosting a volunteer event to promote waste reduction and climate protection in Cambridge.
Volunteers will meet in Porter Square and tackle the following tasks:
1. Reusable bag promotion - Volunteers will hand out reusable bags and educate Porter Square shoppers on the benefits of resuable bag usage.
2. Data collection - The Bring Your Own Bag (BYOB) Ordinance took effect in Cambridge last March. To help measure the regulation's impact, volunteers will collect live data on reusable bag usage at the Star Market in Porter Square.
3. Curbside compost education - Lastly, we'll be talking to North Cambridge residents to build participation in the curbside composting, an initiative to drastically reduce waste and generate renewable energy from food waste. Currently the City diverts more than 6 tons of food waste per week, but there is potential to double that figure!
We will provide a brief training at the beginning of the event to prepare volunteers. We hope you'll join us to make a difference this Earth Day!
