B.Brett Finlay PhD, is a professor of microbiology at the University of British Columbia and a world leader in understanding how bacterial infections work. In the 200 years since we first discovered that microbes cause infectious diseases, we have battled to keep them at bay. But a recent explosion of scientific knowledge has led to undeniable evidence that early exposure to these organisms is beneficial to our health and well-being. Finlay argues that our hyper-vigilance about cleanliness is actually damaging our health and the health of our children. Indeed, imbalance of these important microbes can lead to the development of obesity, diabetes and asthma. So, are we living in an over-sanitized world?

Come to Cambridge Forum’s "LET THEM EAT DIRT” on Wednesday February 1 at 7 PM in the First Parish Church, 1446 Massachusetts Avenue, Cambridge 02138. Free and open to all.
