When we think of yoga, many of us envision - Adho Mukha Svanasana, or downward-facing dog. As one of the most common shapes in yoga, it reflects a common spine stretch performed by dogs after a period of rest. While performed by our four-legged friends with ease and grace, for two-legged humans this pose can be far from restful.
Down dog will surely pose a challenge if you have weakness in the upper body, instability in the wrist or shoulder joints, and/or tightness in the backs of the legs. Practicing this shape repeatedly with good alignment will lead to creating more space in the entire backline and add more strength for the upper body. The question is: how do you get there safely?
In this posture lab we will work on strength drills, muscle stretches, preparatory postures, and discuss joint stability to make downward facing dog more accessible, enjoyable, and safe. With these skills in your yoga tool belt, you will be on your way to downward dog ease where this shape will truly feel like a resting place.
