For nearly 20 years, Red Car has been on a journey – one that started in sunny Los Angeles and marched steadily northward toward a vision of cooler vineyard sites and the complex, aromatic wines they can express.
Red Car was founded in 2000 with 50 cases of wine made from a single ton of Syrah grapes vinified in a Culver City garage. In a nod to their California roots, the new venture was named Red Car after the trolley line that ferried riders across Los Angeles for the first half of the twentieth century. While the wines were met with early critical acclaim, they knew that to truly excel they would need to farm their own vineyards in a cooler climate location. And in 2004, the partners purchased 125 acres of land and began developing vineyards in the wild coastal ridges north of Sonoma County’s Bodega Bay, a region now known as the Fort Ross-Seaview AVA. Here, the interplay of warm sunshine, cool Pacific breezes and sandstone soils yield age-worthy wines of structure and complexity.
Desmond Echavarrie will be pouring these beautiful and classic Pacific coast wines. Des is an entrepreneur and Master Somm on a mission to share dynamic wine brands. By the time he was 30, Des had achieved more than most somms achieve in a lifetime of service. He was inspired by working at The Phoenician in Scottsdale after college, which led to an apprenticeship under a Master Somm, and before Des was old enough to legally drink, he knew he would dedicate his life to learning about and sharing great wine. He won numerous awards in his early 20s, and after nine years of study became the 197th person to earn the title of Master Sommelier. During his career as a sommelier, he earned coveted spots on the wine teams of legendary restaurants.
