Dr. Amy Bower is a Senior Scientist and Department Chair at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. She earned a B.S. from Tufts University in 1981, and a Ph.D. from the University of Rhode Island's Graduate School of Oceanography in 1988. Her boating life began as a child growing up in Rockport, Massachusetts, fishing from the family's Swampscott dory. She was introduced to the field of physical oceanography—the study of ocean currents—when she signed up for Sea Semester, an off-campus program for college students offered by Sea Education Association in Woods Hole.Amy's relationship with CBI goes back nearly 25 years, when she and husband David Fisichella teamed up with then CBI's Craig Zeltser to run Sail for Light—a week-long program to teach sailing to blind and visually impaired adults modeled after a similar program for teaching cross-country skiing. Legally blind herself since the 1980s, Amy has always loved dinghy racing (since sailing as crew for one season with the Tufts sailing team), and recently crewed with CBI member and skipper Duane Farrar to win the World Blind Fleet Sailing Championship in 2015 and 2017.

Amy will discuss the ocean's role in Earth's climate system, and how physical oceanographers make the critical measurements needed to understand how our planet will evolve in the future.
