Rich, radiant, and uniquely soulful, Chameleon celebrates a beloved middle voice and a remarkable viola legacy with an Up Close recital featuring violists Scott Woolweaver and Mark Holloway and pianist Vivian Choi. The concert includes two classic sonatas and two rarely-heard British works: Brahms’ Sonata in f minor, Op. 120, No. 1 and Hindemith’s Sonata for viola & piano, Op. 25, No. 4 along with Arnold Bax’s dazzling, über-romantic 1921 Sonata for viola and piano and Frank Bridge’s tone poem A Willow Grows Aslant a Brook, arranged by his student, Benjamin Britten. George Benjamin’s kaleidoscopic double-viola duo with a cheeky title – Viola, Viola – completes the program.
The Boston Musical Intelligencer recently called out Mr. Woolweaver’s “vivacity and technical brilliance” and The New York Classical Review praised Mr. Holloway’s “impressive playing.” The Boston Globe noted that Ms. Choi “flashed through breathless passages of counterpoint, impossibly fast but no less precise.”
The performance will take place in Mary Norton Hall at Old South Church, transformed into an intimate cabaret setting with table seating and refreshments, and the concert will be hosted by Artistic Director Deborah Boldin.
