Andris Nelsons, conductor
Emanuel Ax, piano
BEETHOVEN Piano Concerto No. 2
BERLIOZ Symphonie fantastique
For this single performance, frequent BSO guest Emanuel Ax joins Andris Nelsons for Beethoven’s youthful Piano Concerto No. 2, which was composed before the work we know as No. 1 but published later. The concerto shows Beethoven’s debt to Mozart and Haydn, even as it anticipates later developments in his own stylistic exploration. Completing the program is Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique, his first masterpiece, remarkably forward-thinking in its use of the orchestra, innovative in form, and quintessentially Romantic in its sometimes feverish depiction of an artist’s unrequited love.
