100 years ago, a typing cockroach and a drunk alley cat took the nation by storm. The stories of archy and mehitabel, published daily in the New York Sun by author Don Marquis, were a sarcastic and bitingly funny take on everyday life that still holds up today. Each night, archy the cockroach would laboriously jump from key to key on Marquis's typewriter to write the next day's column. The column was eventually collected into a series of hugely successful books, turned into a broadway musical and an animated movie, and there was even a 1970s folk song written about it.
Inspired by that story, a group of Boston artists calling ourselves The Cat and The Cockroach Collective have gathered to create a giant typewriter worthy of archy the cockroach. We present to you The Blunderwood Portable, a 24:1 scale 1927 Underwood Standard Portable Typewriter and a matching set of giant poems.
At this scale, the typewriter will be 20' square and 8' tall at the highest point. Our poems will be 16' wide and up to 40' long. At night, people climbing on the keys will project their keystrokes onto the "paper," a 9'x16' projection screen.
Join us for a night of music, dancing, giant art, and interactive video projections and help us raise funds to make this project a reality! We'll have a portion of the typewriter on site for you to play with, as well as normal-sized typewriters.
District Hall is in the heart of the innovation district. We'll have a cash bar, and there is a restaurant on-site if you want to grab a bite-it's open late!
