(2013) dir Andrew Bujalski w/Kriss Schludermann, Tom Fletcher, Wiley Wiggins, Gerald Peary [92 min; DCP]
Former Boston resident and Brattle supporter Andrew Bujalski broke out of the “mumblecore” box in 2013 with this stylistically bold film about an early 80s computer chess contest. Vaguely sci-fi and all-nerdy, COMPUTER CHESS follows the various personalities involved with the contest including a shy newcomer, a rebellious outsider, and the pompous chess expert who presides over it all. Shooting on vintage video cameras, Bujalski uses a unique visual aesthetic that almost feels like we’re viewing a transmission from another time.
