Two Saturdays: June 2 & 9
1:30-3:30pm in Cambridge

Sutra II.1 describes the yoga of action as “discipline, study, and surrender.” Taking inspiration from this sutra, as well as the Bhagavad Gita’s discussion of the yogic paths of discipline and knowledge (among others), this two-part workshop will guide participants in disciplined inquiry into yogic texts and our own preconceived notions around yoga’s historical roots and how this ancient practice has become a modern global phenomenon. Registrants will be asked to read assigned material before each session.

Session One: June 2

Geographic, material, and textual origins of yoga
Philosophical tenets and texts
Paths of yoga
Emerging scholarship around hatha yoga
Colonial influences

Session Two: June 9

Krishnamacharya and his legacy, and other lineages
Modern pioneers (Jois, Iyengar, Devi, Desikachar)
Yoga from 1950s to the present
Popularization, consolidation, & acculturation
Yoga as a global phenomenon
In addition to offering Iyengar levels I-III at Down Under Yoga, Claire teaches courses in yoga theory, culture, and practice in the Social Sciences Division at Lesley University.

Cost: $45 (or $25 for a single day)
