The Newbery Award–winning author of "Dead End in Norvelt" shares advice for how to be the best brilliant writer. With the signature wit and humor that have garnered him legions of fans, Jack Gantos instructs young writers to use their “writing radar” to unearth story ideas from their everyday lives. Incorporating his own misadventures as a developing writer, Gantos shows readers how to build confidence and establish good writing habits as they create, revise, and perfect their stories. "Writing Radar" is a celebration of the power of storytelling and an ode to the characters who―many unwittingly―inspired Gantos's own writing career.

Jack Gantos was a professor at Emerson College, where he developed the master’s degree program in Children’s Literature, Writing and Publishing. He now spends his time writing and speaking at book and literacy conferences, schools, and libraries. His works have received the Newbery Award, Scott O’Dell Award, Newbery Honor, Printz Honor, Sibert Honor, and National Book Award Finalist Honor. He is the 2010 recipient of the NCTE/ALAN AWARD for his contribution to the field of Young Adult and Children’s Literature. Gantos’ most recent novel is "Dead End In Norvelt," which received both the 2012 John Newbery Award and the Scott O’Dell Award for Historical Fiction.

Registration begins August 28 at 9 am.

The Athenæum's five galleried floors overlook the peaceful Granary Burying Ground, and, as Gamaliel Bradford wrote in 1931, "it is safe to say that [no library] anywhere has more an atmosphere of its own, that none is more conducive to intellectual aspiration and spiritual peace." The building was designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1966.
