Fall has some of the most reliable and big mushrooms finds! Hen of the woods, oysters, chickens and more! Join The Trustees and wild mushroom specialist Tyler Akabane on this guided hike through the trails of Ward Reservation.
By the end of this walk, you will be able to identify a range of local wild plants and fungi. You will also learn plenty of peripheral and entertaining fungi information!
Space is limited; pre-registration is required. Please wear hiking boots and weather appropriate clothing.
Tyler Akabane has been studying wild plants and mushrooms for the past 10 years. He is on the ID committee for the Boston Mycological Club, has spent time with world renowned mycologists Alan and Arlene Bessette for two intensive mushroom courses in Maine, and 7 or so years ago he began working with a veteran mushroom hunter named Ben Maleson (who had been selling his mushrooms to restaurants for 40 years prior). Since then, he has made close connections to the restaurant community in Boston. He also teaches wild mushroom courses year-round. Since the beginning of the pandemic Tyler began also selling mushrooms to home chefs in and around the Boston area. He has hopes for a retail store in the near future.
