White Rabbit, Red Rabbit

When Iranian playwright Nassim Soleimanpour found himself unable to leave Iran (having demurred from mandatory military service, the state demurred in providing him a passport), he decided to send on a play that would stand in for him, and maybe stand for something more.

In White Rabbit, Red Rabbit, he distills the experience of an entire generation born amid the hardship of the Iran-Iraq war - computer-literate, well-informed young people who have never known an Iran other than the Islamic Republic.

It has been described as an actor's dream... or an actor's nightmare. White Rabbit, Red Rabbit has no director, no set, no rehearsals, and a different actor for each performance. The actors don't get to see the script until they arrive on stage to perform this utterly wild, original play.

For the performers taking part the role requires no reading, rehearsal and no preparation – but it also demands a faith in a script they will not have previously seen.

Three well-known local actors have accepted the challenge of White Rabbit, Red Rabbit. On April 28, Maureen Keiller will perform the piece, while on May 5 it will be Victor Shopov, and on May 12 it will be John Kuntz. (Performances start at 7:30 PM)

Maureen Keiller has extensive local theater credits with SpeakEasy Stage Company, Lyric Stage, Central Square, New Repertory Theatre, as well as film and television credits.

Victor Shopov has appeared in seven Zeitgeist Stage productions including an IRNE Award winning performance in Enron. He has also appeared with Lyric Stage, Holland Productions, Happy Medium and SpeakEasy Stage Company.

John Kuntz is an actor and playwright who has appeared locally with SpeakEasy Stage Company, Actors Shakespeare project, Huntington Theatre Company, American Repertory Theater, New Repertory Theatre, Nora Theatre Company and many more.

White Rabbit, Red Rabbit has been performed around the world at theater festivals and in main-stage presentations. The audience is given the playwright’s email address during the show, and they can send photographs and notes by mobile phone about the performance.

Admission is free and open to the public, however reservations are required. Email [email protected] for reservations. Please specify date of performance in the email.
