Lunchtime Talk with Robert A. Selig, Ph.D.
Following almost any military engagement, corpses in various stages of mutilation litter the countryside. During the American War of Independence, disposing of them, or not, sooner, or sometimes later, fell mostly to the civilian population. But can we tell who buried whom? When? Hours, days, months later? Where? In graves? Crevices? Lakes? How were they buried? Naked or dressed? Officers and other ranks together? With military and/or religious honors and ceremonies? Are they ever found? And if so, who would dig them up and why? Can we identify them? What happens with the skeletons? Where are they today?
