The Imperial Juunihitoe - 12 Layered Kimono

Join the Japan Society of Boston, Kyoto Gakuen University and the Kyoto Costume Museum for a rare chance to see a historic 12-layered kimono in Boston! Two experts from Japan will demonstrate the process of dressing someone in a juunihitoe, layer by layer, and explain the history and culture behind it. Guests will be able to touch and experience this imperial, historic garment - a rare opportunity even in Japan.

The juunihitoe is a traditional garb worn by nobles in Japan in the Heian Era, made up of 12 layers up kimono weighing up to 40 pounds. Each layer is rich in historic meaning and symbol. Today, only members of the Imperial Family wear juunihitoe for enthronement and other very formal functions. Other than that, this complicated clothing can only be seen in museums and films. Join us for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see a live model dressed in the juunihitoe in person!

There will be a question and answer period and light reception following the presentation.
