Join New England International Donors and the TripAdvisor Charitable Foundation for an expert panel discussion to learn about the global refugee crisis, on-the-ground efforts and how NGOs, corporations, government and local communities can unite to take action.
The UN reports that the world is experiencing one of the worst refugee crises and mass displacements of people since World War II, impacting millions of people who are seeking safe haven. As of the end of 2015, 65.3 million people – or one out of every 113 people on Earth – are impacted.
In Syria alone, more than 11 million people have either died or fled their homes since the start of the country’s brutal civil war in 2011 and 6.6 million more are displaced inside where immense violence continues against civilians. Millions of children and families are fleeing to neighboring countries, overwhelming those populations and draining already tight budgets to provide services. Others have gone to Europe and the U.S. where they struggle to find sustainable employment and integrate in increasingly divided societies.
In 2016, the U.S. resettled 85,000 refugees throughout all states and close to 2,000 in Massachusetts. In 2017, the U.S. plans to increase that by 30% to 110,000 refugees. Resettlement efforts are complex and must support children and families with immediate basic needs, employment, education and other services to make ends meet as they are introduced to a new culture, society and home.
