Back when President Johnson launched the War on Poverty in 1964 the majority of initiatives focused on job training and placement programs. At the time manufacturing jobs played an important role in the economy, and the federally funded programs led to employment. Over the past 52 years our society has drastically changed, yet many of the Johnson era programs have not evolved with the times. Another factor stunting a person’s economic mobility is the lack of cohesion in the nonprofit space. The majority of NPOs across America operates in their own silos, have budgets <$500,000, lack evidence based data, struggle to align their work with funders’ priorities, and do not have access to scaled mechanisms for capacity building. Solving these issues involves proven tools and frameworks, robust research and evaluation mechanisms, an expansive learning platform, and public/private funding partnerships to leverage effective social change.
