“Theory of Shiny Things”

South Street Gallery, the area’s premier gallery featuring local, regional and national artists, has announced that an upcoming 3-week exhibit will feature the works of Sue Charles, long-time south shore resident, now living on the north shore.
The display will be open to the public at the Gallery on Friday, November 11th and everyone is invited to meet Sue at the opening event from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. The exhibit will be on display until December 8th.

Charles grew up in Scituate, MA and graduated from Boston University School of Fine Arts. She used to teach oil painting at the North River Arts Society in Marshfield and the South Shore Art Center in Cohasset.

Charles says: “Why do we like shiny things? It is my unscientific theory that in nature, the one very shiny thing is water, and for any animal, the ability to find water means survival, so we are drawn to shiny things from way way back. For a long time I have been intrigued by this thought and for the past year and I have focused on it in my work. Much of the work involves water and reflections. Some of the paintings incorporate gold leaf as an element of actual reflective light, something not possible with flat paint. Some paintings are large, others very small...but they're all about shining.
My home, the northeast coast of the Atlantic is my subject. Wanting to draw well, I went to BU’s College of Fine Arts, where teachers taught fine art by focusing on acquiring observation skills and mastering the tools of the trade. Bruegel, Heade, Inness, Porter, Thomson, Shils and Kahn are favorite artists and I have learned by looking at their work, that paintings exists in many dimensions. They depict three dimensions of light and space with two dimensions of color, they express the fourth dimension of time in their marks and they reveal nonverbal thoughts and emotion. Finding the intersection between these ways of perceiving is my goal. The long lines of landscape space, light and air connecting everything and the quiet profundity of nature. A good painting contains only the essentials and it stays with you like a hummable melody. I aim for that.”
