The Women for Greater Philadelphia will present the acclaimed WISTER QUARTET in its Concerts by Candlelight series at Laurel Hill Mansion in East Fairmount Park on Sunday, July 23, 2017 at 6:30 p.m. The Wister Quartet (Nancy Bean and Davyd Booth, violins; Pamela Fay, viola; and Lloyd Smith, cello) will present a program featuring Joseph Haydn’s eloquently serious “Quinten” String Quartet in D Minor, Op. 76, No. 2; a rhythmically and harmonically intriguing work by Romanian composer Marcel Farago, his Duo for violin and cello, Op. 52; and Johannes Brahms’ lyrically heartfelt String Quartet in A Minor, Op. 51, No. 2.
The concert will be held in the grand octagonal ballrom of the beautifully restored Laurel Hill Mansion. All tickets are $25. Seating is limited and reservations are required. Named to honor Frances Anne Wister, founder of the Volunteer Committees of The Philadelphia Orchestra, the Wister Quartet is celebrating its 30th season in 2016-17. It has earned high praise from critics and audiences alike for its superb musicianship and memorable performances. Daniel Webster of The Philadelphia Inquirer has called the quartet “the foremost [Philadelphia] chamber music ensemble.” David Patrick Stearns of The Philadelphia Inquirer recently wrote, “Fierce, satisfying . . . . This was a long-cultivated group personality for which there should always be a place, no matter how busy the musical community becomes.”
