The Internet of Things is upon us! Connected Products are everywhere, and companies like the newly Google-acquired Nest are bringing the IoT into our homes. Come be a part of the next major leap forward in mankind’s technical evolution - The Internet of Things! Come to this workshop equipped with your own IoT ideas and make them a reality, or build a device as part of a collaborative build-a-thon.

Through this hands-on development workshop, novice or experienced IoT developers will assemble a Sensor Node using a variety of connected devices, a variety of sensors and a monitoring application built on an IoT Platform. Attendees will be able to choose between two tracks, hardware-minded developers can dive right into the Connectivity Track and get their hands dirty, while application developers on our App Track can build apps to leverage the firehose of data flowing in.

THE TRACKS
The Connectivity Track uses pre-selected IoT hardware to build a “Sensor Node”. Each Node is basically a series of sensors tied to an IoT Device, and reporting the data from its sensors up to the Cloud. There will be some room for customization, but most of the track will consist of people “On Rails” following instructions to build a common Device. Together, these distributed Sensor Nodes form a “Sensor Network” or “Sensor Mesh”. Example sensors will be “Temperature”, “Sound Volume”, “Light Level”, and some cooler ones. On top of the data coming from these Nodes, there will be a common application developed by Axeda (the event Host) that shows the data from these SensorNodes. Our focus will be on cool visualizations (we want some “pop”).

In addition to the one “big” Application from the instructors, we will also have an Application Track where developers will build an application on the IoT Platform using APIs and developer features. We will also make it easy for people to build apps on other platforms using the data from our pre-built Web Services. These Apps will also be shown in the same displays that we have setup for the main app.

At the end of the session, we will “launch” the Sensor Network and leave it running, with displays the live data.

TAKEAWAYS
Students who follow the Connectivity Track will learn/be able to:

Work hands-on with a Raspberry Pi rapid prototyping Device
Learn how to connect sensors to measure the environment around their Device
Build a working IoT product that communicates data up into the Cloud
Become an active contributor to the Internet of Things!
Students who follow the App Track will learn/be able to:

Use their JavaScript/HTML/CSS or IoS/Android or InsertLanguageHere skills to put together a cloud-hosted IoT application
Learn how to interact with Connected Products, included strategies around Addressability and data aggregation
Work with live IoT sensor data being collected by the devices around them
Become an active contributor to the Internet of Things!

PREREQS & PREPARATION
Regardless of your skillset, if you can code it you can build it!
