More than 275,000 tons of ice was shipped from Boston Harbor in 1872. That ice made its way by sailing ships to Cuba, Trinidad, Brazil, India, China, and other points around the globe. One major producer of ice in Boston was the Jamaica Plain Ice Company with ice harvesting operations at Jamaica Pond. Hundreds of men labored year round to harvest, store, and transport ice to local homes, businesses, and awaiting ships. Trade in ice was of mainstay of the Boston economy, second only to grain and cotton. Come hear Charlie Rosenberg of the Jamaica Plain Historical Society speak about this period in Jamaica Plain when “Ice was King” and see photographs of ice harvesting teams, delivery wagons, and warehouses where ice was stored.
