The Gondoliers; or, The King of Barataria, takes place in Venice and the fictional Spanish-esque kingdom of Barataria. When the King of Barataria is killed in an insurrection, the Duke and Duchess of Plaza Toro, their daughter Casilda, and drummer Luiz travel to Venice to track down the heir to the throne. However, due to various shenanigans on the part of the Grand Inquisitor, the prince who is the heir is hidden, and no one is entirely sure who it could be. The search focuses on a pair of gondolier brothers, Marco and Giuseppe Palmieri, in Venice, who travel to Barataria and rule it together while the hunt for the true heir continues. Various love/marriage triangles, several digs at monarchical and republic government, and some strange governmental positions later, the search ultimately reaches its surprising and comedic conclusion.
