Newlyweds Rosemary and Guy Woodhouse (Mia Farrow and John Cassavetes) move into the massive Bramford apartment building on the edge of Central Park in the Upper West Side of Manhattan with the hopes of starting a family and launching a burgeoning acting career.
Meddlesome but seemingly well meaning neighbors Minnie and Roman Castevet (Ruth Gordon and Sidney Blackmer) quickly befriend the Woodhouses and help them get settled in their new digs. When unexpected things begin to happen, however, Rosemary suspects that there's more behind the surface of the Castevets' interest in her than just tea and sympathy.
