After emigrating to the American South, our transgender protagonist, Iphis, explores his identity while navigating his new cultural landscape. This world premiere opera exposes the daily bigotry and courage Iphis must grapple with and adopt as his LGBT social circle collides with the traditional American Family his host mother is so desperately trying to maintain. A contemplation on identity and transition that highlights the many aspects of gender identity, The Body Politic challenges our cultural understandings of gender and its shortcomings. Designed for black box theater, our staging represents Iphis’ native and new countries, both of which we see in flashbacks throughout the opera. Scored for a seven instrument ensemble, this opera uses new music to challenge old prejudices and to shine light on the marginalization faced by this community. The production will take place in Boston Center for the Arts Plaza Theater, May 5-7 2016.
