When the Puritans reached Massachusetts in 1630, nothing went according to plan. There was no flourishing plantation awaiting them in Salem as expected – just disease and starvation, so they had to find a different destination further south. In Boston, everything from inadequate shelter to scurvy to a frozen harbor conspired against these settlers, and half of the original 800 arrivals perished or fled.
For the remaining 400 Puritans: after merely surviving, then what?
The task of building a society and a working economy from scratch was daunting and slow. In this multifaceted event, we’ll see and hear about the challenges the Puritans faced upon arrival in Boston. We will explore some archaeological findings relevant to daily life and work during Boston's first hardscrabble decades after 1630.
The event is free but an RSVP is required at http://bcd2014monday.eventbrite.com
