William Bryant Logan, Certified Arborist, Founder and President of Urban Arborists, Inc., and Author

Location: Arnold Arboretum, Hunnewell Building

Tree pollarding, an ancient way of pruning that prompts thick nests of sprouts to form on major branches, was once the ordinary practice in all prosperous communities. Yet, somehow, what was mundane to a villager in the Middle Ages has slipped from use, and even memory, in the twenty first century. Hear Logan speak of the many ways in which lost ancient arts such as pruning hazel, creating living hedges, and growing oak for ships sustained human life and culture for ten millennia, and how we might recover them, appreciate the persistence and generosity of trees, and re-learn how to live with trees to mutual benefit.
Fee $5.
