Wide-open coastal sites are the location of choice for wintering Snowy Owls; common perches are dunes and salt hay staddles. In winters past, the owls have been frequent visitors to the Crane Wildlife Refuge.

Join us as we hike the dunes in search of these magnificent birds. Unlike most owls, snowy owls are diurnal—they hunt and are active both day and night – so we have a good chance of sighting one even in the daylight hours!

Because we will be looking for Snowy Owls, sometimes on distant dunes, please bring binoculars if you have them. We will have a few pairs available for use.

Please be aware that for public health and saftey during the COVID-19 pandemic, we require all staff, volunteers, and guests (over 2 years old) to wear a mask at all times during this event, including while hiking. We have reduced our event capacities to better facilitate social distancing. Please do not attend if you have any symptoms consistent with COVID-19, have traveled out of New England in the last 2 weeks, or have been exposed to someone with COVID-19. Thank you!
