ACTON, MA: Open Door Theater of Acton proudly presents SHREK: The Musical, March 20 - 29 at the R.J. Grey Junior High School. Based on the Oscar-winning DreamWorks Animation film, Shrek, The Musical is a Tony Award-winning fairy tale adventure. It’s the tale of an unlikely hero who finds himself on a life-changing journey alongside a wisecracking Donkey and a feisty princess. Throw in a short tempered bad guy, and over a dozen other fairy tale misfits, and you’ve got the kind of mess that calls for a real hero. Luckily, there's one on hand ... and his name is Shrek. Irreverently fun for the whole family, Shrek: The Musical proves that beauty is truly in the eye of the ogre.

About Open Door Theater: Since its founding in 1980, Open Door Theater has remained committed to its unique, inclusive mission: to provide a theatrical learning experience to families and people with special needs. We have presented 34 musicals, each with an inclusive multi-generational cast and crew. Actors and crew members with a wide variety of challenges have always been part of our community and our productions. Open Door is committed to finding ways to accommodate and celebrate each cast and crew member's individual physical or cognitive differences in a way that accentuates and honors each actor’s strengths and abilities. We are also committed to ensuring that our performances are as accessible as possible, to as wide an audience as possible. Nine shows have featured an ASL-interpreted performance, beginning in 2006, and since 2013 we have offered a sensory friendly performance especially designed for audience members with autism and sensory challenges. An audio described performance for visually impaired audiences was added in 2014.
“Inclusion doesn’t mean simply inviting people with differences into our space,” says Open Door President Sam Gould, “Inclusion means making our space and our performance as welcoming and accessible as possible to all patrons, so that everyone can participate, onstage and off, in the communal experience of a live performance. By listening to our cast and community members, who represent every aspect of the human spectrum, we learn more every year about how to create a positive experience for all.” In addition to our annual production, Open Door participates in a variety of community outreach programs, including being selected as one of only 10 non-profit organizations enrolled in the Massachusetts Cultural Council's UP Learning and Innovation Program to become more universally accessible. The cast and crew of our 2014 production of Working were proud to be awarded the Eastern Massachusetts Association of Community Theater's DASH Special Consultants Choice Award for Excellence in Accessibility to All.
