Sanctuary: Reading Migration
Kickoff event featuring local poets
Friday, February 24, 7:00 p.m.
There’s been a lot of fear and heartbreak in our migrant communities over the past few months. In response, we offer this evening of migrant voices, poetics and imagination to inspire and transform us.
CHRISTIAN CAMPBELL is is a poet, essayist and cultural critic and the author of the widely acclaimed book, Running the Dusk (Peepal Tree Press), which Yusef Komunyakaa calls “the gutsy work of a long-distance runner who possesses the wit and endurance, the staying power of authentic genius.” Running the Dusk was recently translated into Spanish by Aida Bahr and published in Cuba as Correr el Crepúsculo. His art writing on Jean-Michel Basquiat has been commissioned by the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Guggenheim Bilbao, Nahmad Contemporary, the Barbican Art Gallery and the Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt.
PATRICK ROSAL is the author of four books of poetry, most recently Brooklyn Antediluvian, which was a finalist for the Kingsley Tufts Poetry Award. He is an Associate Professor of English at Rutgers University-Camden.
SEEMA REZA is a poet and essayist and the author of When the World Breaks Open (Red Hen Press, 2016). Based outside of Washington DC she coordinates and facilitates a unique hospital arts program that encourages the use of the arts as a tool for narration, self-care and socialization among a military population struggling with emotional and physical injuries. An alumnus of Goddard College and VONA, her work has appeared on-line and in print in Bellevue Literary Review, The Beltway Quarterly, HerKind, Duende, The Offing and Entropy among others.
ANDREA WALLS is a poet and digital artist. She is the author of the chapbook, Ultraviolet Catastrophe, (Thread Makes Blanket Press, 2011) and the creator of theblackbodycurve.com, an interactive poetry and digital arts collection. She is a Pushcart Prize in Poetry nominee and a recipient of a Leeway Art and Social Change Grant. She is a participant in the VONA/Voices Summer Workshops for Writers of Color and an alumna of the Hedgebrook Residency for Women Authoring Change. Her poetry and visual art have been published in venues including, Callaloo, Journal of African Diaspora Arts & Letters; Solstice Literary Magazine; Tidal Basin Review; Kweli; bozalta: Arts, Activism & Scholarship and heart (human equity through art) online journal. She lives and makes art in Philadelphia and is the host of a bi-monthly gathering of artists at Arts Sanctuary in South Philly.
