Disrupted Spaces presents photographs that challenge the boundaries of physical and theoretical structures. The artists featured in this exhibition harness photography’s role in determining how and what we remember, while simultaneously undermining the notion of photographs as reliable records of reality. Through processes of abstraction, manipulation, performance, and appropriation, these images disrupt our expectations and raise questions related to history, place, and belonging: who can claim a space, what memories can a land hold, and how is history constructed?
The works in Disrupted Spaces were gifted to the Rose Art Museum by Carey Schwartz, Class of 1987. The collection was donated expressly to be displayed in student areas around campus in order to facilitate experiences with art in places outside the museum. This marks the first curated exhibition of these works and was organized by the Rose Art Museum’s curatorial interns, Sarah McCarty and Sofía Retta.
The exhibition will be on view March 12 - May 20.
