Journey with Rick Steves, America’s leading authority on European travel, as he and the Boston Pops transport you on a musical voyage. Mr. Steves’ extensive knowledge of European history and culture set the context for each piece as the orchestra performs a selection of stirring 19th-century anthems by Romantic-era composers, including Grieg, Smetana, Strauss, Berlioz, Elgar, Wagner, and Verdi, conducted by Portuguese-American Jacomo Bairos. Each selection honors a particular nation, while the finale, Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy” (Europe’s official anthem) pays homage to the continent’s motto of “United in Diversity.” The concert is enhanced by a montage of evocative video images curated by Rick Steves.

This concert’s program includes a celebration of the 68th Annual Armenian Night at the Pops.

PRE- and POST CONCERT EVENTS

At 7:15pm in Higginson Hall, join Rick Steves for a lecture where he shares his love of Europe, why he thinks travel is more important than ever to broaden our perspectives, and the back story on his collaboration with the Boston Pops in which he celebrates Romantic Era music and how it makes hearts pound differently all around Europe.

Also, please join us in Higginson Hall for a post-concert book signing/meet & greet with Rick Steves. Items available for purchase include the A Symphonic Journey DVD/Booklet and CD combo, as well as the books Travel As A Political Act – Leave your baggage at home and Europe Through the Back Door. Cash bars will be open.
