October Salon with Chris Caggiano
Gilbert & Sullivan: A Partnership for the Ages
Friday, October 24, 2014
Sir Arthur Sullivan (and his music) make an important appearance in this year’s Victorian Christmas Revels. His great fame, however, came as part of the comic opera duo Gilbert and Sullivan. Musical theater historian and critic Christopher Caggiano will lead us through a multimedia presentation detailing the start of their partnership, how HMS Pinafore established their popularity, and the unwitting role that copyright law (or lack thereof) played in establishing G&S as a household name. He’ll then focus on a turning point in their relationship during the creation of their most enduring show, The Mikado.
Christopher Caggiano is a full-time faculty member at The Boston Conservatory, where he teaches courses in musical-theater history, arts criticism and the neuroscience of music, and was recently named liberal-arts faculty member of the year. Caggiano is also the author of the popular theater blog, "Everything I Know I Learned From Musicals" (www.everythingmusicals.com), which consistently ranks among the top 25 theater sites on the internet. He is also a member of the Outer Critics Circle and the Drama League, and was named a 2010 Fellow at the National Critics Institute at the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center.
