This concert explores two concepts much on the minds of Americans today: the protesting of injustice and the expression of love of one’s country. Often misinterpreted as mutually exclusive, at this event these notions are honored as intimately connected and celebrated. We honor the 80th birthday of internationally-renowned composer John Harbison with his spirited cycle, Songs America Loves to Sing. At the same time, we embrace the memory of recently deceased composer Olly Wilson, who spearheaded the integration of African rhythms and electronics into Western classical music, with his Trio for violin, cello and piano. Flanked by these two substantial and inspiring works will be traditional and contemporary protest songs, performed and led by folksinger/guitarist Anand Nayak.
