(BOSTON, MA) – The Boston Center for Adult Education (BCAE), the premier nonprofit adult education center located in Boston, MA, is hosting the second annual “Rarely Seen: Boston’s Historic Treasures” series. The six class series aims to offer Bostonians a glimpse into their city’s mysterious and intriguing history through visiting six prominent historic locations.

On Thursday, July 23rd, 2015 from 5:30PM to 7:00PM, the first class will be held at The Normal B. Leventhal Map Center. This informational session will offer participants the chance to get an up-close look at treasures that are not on display for public—including Dutch atlases from the age of exploration and a Revolutionary-era powder horn with a Bunker Hill map carved into its side.

On Thursday, August 6th, 2015 from 5:30PM to 7:00PM, the second class will give a behind-the-scenes look at one of the nation’s most important colonial landmarks: the The Old South Meeting House. Students will have the chance to experience one of Boston’s most treasured landmarks and stand in the very place where colonists started the revolution. The visit includes a bird’s eye view of downtown crossing and a view of the 1801 Paul Revere Bell and the 1768 tower clock.

The third class takes students to The New England Historic Genealogical Society on Wednesday, August 12th, 2015 from 5:30PM to 7:00PM. Here, participants will take a tour of the first four floors of the Genealogical Society and see the amazing collection of historic documents that help the citizens of Boston get a peek into their family’s past.

On Monday, August 17th, 2015 from 5:30PM to 7:00PM, the fourth session will be held at The Gibson House Museum. This location is treasured for the story it tells about upper-middle class life in Boston during the late-nineteenth to mid-twentieth century. It immerses visitors in the elegant wallpapers, imported carpets, and abundance of furniture, paintings, and more of that era. Participants get to experience the lives of four generations of one family living in Boston’s Back Bay from 1860 and 1954 while also getting a rare glimpse of the home’s other inhabitants: the servants whose “downstairs” lives were largely played out behind the scenes.

On Thursday, August 20th, 2015 from 6:00PM to 7:30PM, the fifth class will be led by Historic New England at The Otis House. This class includes a tour of the elegantly furnished Beacon Hill residence where students can browse the unique collection of personal photographs, prints, architectural drawings, and ephemera from the Otis House’s vast library and archives. Attendees will also get an exclusive tour of the third floor servant quarters that is not usually open to the public.

The final class will let attendees uncover hidden treasures at The Massachusetts Historical Society onWednesday, August 26th, 2015 from 5:30PM to 7:00PM. Here, participants will discover noteworthy manuscripts such as the intimate letters between John and Abigail Adams. Sports enthusiasts will enjoy Red Sox artifacts like their 1912 World Series medal. Rare presidential gems such as Thomas Jefferson’s architectural drawings and epaulettes worn by George Washington will also be on display. Participants will have the chance to tour the conservation lab and take a visit to the collection storage area.

Participants can join the Rarely Seen tours for one or all six sessions. Each session offers unique insight into Boston’s rich history. Registration is $25 per person, per class.
