Join teaching artist Annie Silverman to discover how artists capture the look and feel of New England’s built and natural environments. After visiting the exhibition gallery for some close looking at featured artworks from "New England on Paper: Contemporary Art in the Boston Athenæum's Prints & Photographs Collections," participants will experience aspects of the printing process by carving and creating their own stamps from malleable rubber, then using them to create an original artwork.

This program is recommended for children ages 8 and up. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Annie Silverman is a relief printmaker and book artist whose work is represented in the Prints and Photographs Collection of the Boston Athenæum. Silverman has been creating experimental work with print installations, dimensional objects, and books for more than 20 years. In 2008 with Sandra Butler and Nina Wishnok, she formed ABRAZOS Press, a small professional and teaching studio in Somerville, Massachusetts, where they routinely lead workshops in mixed media printmaking, improvisational woodcut, and artists' books. Silverman teaches artists' books and relief printmaking as an instructor at Massachusetts College of Art and Design. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, including in Manchester, England; Utrecht, Netherlands; and Kyoto, Japan.

Registration is recommended, but not required.

Registration begins April 7 at 9 am.

The Athenæum's five galleried floors overlook the peaceful Granary Burying Ground, and, as Gamaliel Bradford wrote in 1931, "it is safe to say that [no library] anywhere has more an atmosphere of its own, that none is more conducive to intellectual aspiration and spiritual peace." The building was designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1966.
