The Somerville Symphony Orkestar (http://www.ssoband.com
) is an all-original Gyspy-Punk band. Formed in 2009, the SSO has been constantly gaining notice from many of the music scenes in and around New England. With the success of their first album, the SSO has shared the stage with the Rebirth Brass Band, Melvin Seal and the Gerry Garcia Band, and Jack Sonni (from the Dire Straits) among others. The SSO beats Balkan music, Klezmer, Funk, and Punk into a funk-punky pulp. The complex arrangements reign in the chaos only to explode into equal parts mosh-pit and horah.
) makes life-affirming, body-shaking music that moves people around the world. While the band has toured everywhere from Japan to Brazil, New York City is home. With bright horns, socially conscious lyrics and booty-bouncing beats, Karikatura delivers real songs that transcend style and genre.
Cocek! Brass Band (http://www.cocekbrassband.com/
) is the brainchild of trumpet player Sam Dechenne. The band performs original music by Dechenne based on the sounds of Eastern European brass bands. They are a 5-piece group (2 trumpets, trombone, tuba and bass drum) that rocks the house on a very regular basis. The band's members come from internationally touring ensembles like John Brown's Body and Itzhak Perlman and bring a blend of dance music with emotive improvisation and melodies that evoke crazy dancing, contemplative thoughts and good times. This is not a band to be missed.
