We are all living through a time of great crisis. We all know it. Some try to deny it, bury their heads in the sand, and employ every manner of escape. Others find themselves overwhelmed and paralyzed by fear. The Greek word for “crisis” not only refers to a problem but also change.

For the students of history, and not just near history but far history, they can recognize cycles which show there have been many crises in humanity’s long journey and there will be many more to come. But, today, we are like children, with no memory and even less foresight, who imagine that our time is unique or special in confronting crises.

The apex of civilization can be characterized by a convergence of ideas and synthesis of perspectives, a great diversity within a greater unity. But today we can observe a splintering of civilization, a fragmentation of all that was once cohesive and coherent. Without a unifying vision, diversity degenerates into division.

The crisis that we are confronted with is not just global, it also is an intimately human one. It seems that the creative impulse no longer aspires to beauty but to the banality of the moment. And where is there a place for the truly imaginative, authentic and sincere in the human being? The philosopher recognizes that the crises we are living through represents opportunity. If it is a time for change, then why not change ourselves and the world into something better than before. Where some see despair, the philosopher sees hope.

Where some see a future as through a haze, the philosopher dares to dream for a new and better world. We can’t change reality but we can reposition ourselves to see it from a different vantage point. If we can choose our view of reality, maybe we can reshape the world. This is the power of philosophy and the magic wand that the philosopher yields. And, maybe, just maybe, the world can use a little magic.

Join us in a dialogue as we dive into what it means to live in a time of unexpected change with a philosophical attitude towards life.
