The French Cultural Center is proud to welcome Charlie Allen’s collection Paris: Point of Departure to their gallery for the month of October.
While visiting Paris in 2013, Charlie Allen channeled his favorite French artists: Gustave Caillebotte, Camille Pissarro and Claude Monet. Their views from above looking down on the movement of the city or countryside, plus the reflective light and the patterns made by Parisians, have always been intriguing to Mr. Allen. Paris was alive for these artists, and they painted it as their point of departure. Charlie Allen also wanted Paris to be his point of departure.
As a spectator/artist, the artist attempts to portray a sense of change and time in his Paris paintings. He captures the constant sound of traffic, sirens and footsteps and the rhythm/movement of people involved in their everyday lives. He also became intrigued with the tension and patterns ordinary objects make (chairs in the park or pigeons) and their relationship to each other. When observing and experiencing Caillebotte and Pissarro’s paintings, one can’t help but hear the social and industrial sounds of their time. In contrast, while in Monet’s Giverny, Mr. Allen experienced an amazing sense of tranquility with the flowers in bloom and the smell of spring in the country air. He painted two paintings in homage of the great Claude Monet.
These sensual experiences became the background music, the ‘beat’ he experienced when home in Salem, putting paint to brush…remembering Paris…as his point of departure.
Exhibit: October 1 - 29, 2014. Monday - Thursday: 9:00 AM - 9:00 PM. Saturday: 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM. Friday by appointment.
Entrance to the exhibit is free.
Art Opening: Wednesday, October 8, 6:30 PM - 8:30 PM
Complimentary French wine will be served at the opening reception
