Join us on Saturday, November 18 from 11 am–2 pm for discussions and screenings to launch Watch and Chill 3.0: Streaming Suspense at PEM.

Watch and Chill is the world’s first subscription-based, streamed film festival. Created by the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMCA) Seoul, Watch and Chill is presented as a collaboration between art institutions that each offer a physical screening experience alongside the online presentation.

Streaming Suspense features a global array of 23 artists who are exploring and reimagining the suspense genre. Their work is organized around five topics: “Landscape under Moonlight,” “Assembly of Evidence,” “Mutable Corpus,” “Performance of the Undead” and “Post-Dystopian Worldbuilding.” A selection of films will be screened every day the museum is open between November 18 and December 2.

To kick off the video presentation at PEM, Curators Dan Finamore, Jiyeon Kim and Trevor Smith will co-host two lively panel discussions.

Screening & Conversation: Mixing Realities

11:00 am–12:15 pm

Cultural expressions can be created and mixed in digital environments that do not or cannot coexist in physical space. This conversation will explore the possibilities that have emerged as Watch and Chill combines digital and physical viewing experiences while forging new alliances across dramatically different cultural organizations.

Screening & Conversation: Dystopia Now?

12:45–2:00 pm

Artists and audiences have long negotiated social anxiety and cultural change through the genre of suspense. The artists in Watch and Chill 3.0: Streaming Suspense evoke the uncanny, unravel mysteries, express horror or forensically analyze our present circumstances. They shapeshift and imagine alternative futures in response to traumatic events. This conversation will explore how these artists are responding to the complex challenges of our time.
