The Boston Athenæum holds an extraordinary, but little known, collection of World War I posters. Consisting of nearly 1,800 posters from fourteen countries, this collection provides a unique graphic record of the War of Nations. The exhibition, Over Here: World War I Posters from around the World, timed to coincide with centennial observances of World War I, will feature highlights from the collection, including forty-four framed posters and cases filled with leaflets, postcards, and book and magazine illustrations.
Although most war artists rejected modernism in favor of more traditional, narrative styles, the exhibition also includes posters in which abstract imagery was used successfully, such as "Now Back the Bayonets" based on a design by the British Futurist painter, C. R. W. Nevinson. By presenting posters from several countries, Over Here also demonstrates the unique national characteristics of poster production during the War. In addition, the exhibition introduces viewers to the wide array of themes addressed in World War I posters, including enlistment, war funding, charity, and personal sacrifice, as well as love of country and hatred of the enemy.
"Over Here: World War I Posters from Around the World" is curated by Catharina Slautterback, Curator of Prints & Photographs at the Boston Athenæum. The exhibition is accompanied by an illustrated booklet with an essay by Ms. Slautterback.
Visitors are also permitted on portions of the ground floor, but will be asked to sign guestbook and leave any oversize bags with security. Photography is prohibited.
