Join us for an afternoon of nature exploration and art-making in community! Zines are self-publications that are filled with original work or ideas that can be easily reproduced and shared in small batches. We will explore the sanctuary for nature inspiration and create our own zines featuring collaged images, drawings, and writings about nature. Salvation burnette, writing professor at Emerson College will lead us in a generative writing workshop about weather poems to be included in the zines. No experience necessary - art-making is for everyone!

The weather can have a profound effect on our mood. A sunny day might make you feel happy and energized or sweaty and tired. A snowy day might make you feel sluggish trudging to work or content to stay home in your favorite sweatshirt. It also affects the nature around us. Dandelions close their blooms tightly in response to rain. Ducks don't mind the rain at all, and often use the opportunity of a rainy day to preen their feathers.

Writers often use the weather to illustrate setting and to set the mood of a piece of writing-a torrential storm heightens the uncertainty of scary or emotional moments; a soft mist or fog creates an eerie, magical feeling. Weather is also great for expressing our feelings through figurative language. Have you ever felt happiness like a gentle wind? Hope in warm summer rain? Have you felt depression like a heatwave, grief like an ice storm?

In this workshop, we'll observe how the weather is affecting ourselves and our surroundings. We'll read a couple of weather-themed poems together and then go on a trail walk (approx. 1 mile) that incorporates observation activities. We'll have time to relax in nature and write our own poems inspired by the weather based on themed prompts, and then we'll have the chance to share our experiences and/or writing at the end.

This workshop is open to writers of any experience level!
