On Sunday, March 17 at 10:30 am, the choirs of the Unitarian Universalist Society of Wellesley Hills (UU Wellesley Hills) and the First Parish Church of Stow & Acton, Unitarian Universalist will join together in Wellesley to present Gabriel Fauré’s Requiem in observance of Music Sunday. The performance will be repeated on March 24 in Stowe. Music Sunday is an annual tradition for Unitarian Universalism as well as other faith denominations. The Fauré Requiem is an unusual work, scored for four-part choir, soprano and baritone soloists and orchestra. The March 17 performance will utilize a professional chamber orchestra and will be led by Dr. Suzanne Cartreine, Director of Music at UU Wellesley Hills and formerly Director of Music (2002-2011) at First Parish Church of Stow & Acton.
The Fauré Requiem is a gentle work, unlike many of the fiery treatments of other composers. Some have called it a lullaby of death, a designation that Fauré himself embraced. The composer described the work as “…dominated from beginning to end by a very human feeling of faith in eternal rest.” The work is an expression of trust in a merciful God, and an offering of consolation and hope to those facing death. Fauré saw death as a “happy deliverance, an aspiration towards happiness above.”
Dr. Cartreine brings a wealth of education and experience to her position. Her academic record includes a Doctorate of Musical Arts from Boston University, Choral Conducting Certificates from Eastman School of Music and Westminster Choir College, and a Master of Music from Temple University. People are frequently surprised to learn that Dr. Cartreine also received a bachelor’s degree in Physics, summa cum laudeand that her first job was in computer science. When asked how she came to pursue a music career instead, Dr. Cartreine said: “My day job was not leaving me enough time for my “hobby”, which was my real love.”
When asked why she selected the Requiem for Music Sunday, Dr. Cartreine acknowledged a deep love for the work. “It has gentle, yet soaring melodies, intriguing harmonies and relationships between parts.” Music Sunday is a free event, and all are welcome.
