Join the New England Philharmonic Chamber Players for the world premiere of new music celebrating the Athenæum's recent digitization of "Primus liber [septum librorum] viginti missarum," a collection of twenty masses published by Pierre Attaingnant in Paris in 1532.


"Primus liber" represents Attaingnant’s work in advancing music-printing technology. He developed an efficient single-impression printing system that became the standard in Europe for more than 200 years. The Athenæum’s volume is the only perfectly intact extant example of his masterwork.


In this collaborative celebration, the Boston Athenæum will present two newly-commissioned compositions by Bernard Hoffer and Emily Koh, inspired by material from Attaingnant’s collection of masses. Principal players of the New England Philharmonic will perform Hoffer's "Musica Sacra" and Koh's "-logos-," along with Bernard Hoffer's new transcriptions for chamber octet of selections from Bach's sublime St. Matthew Passion, arranged especially for this performance.

The Athenæum's five galleried floors overlook the peaceful Granary Burying Ground, and, as Gamaliel Bradford wrote in 1931, "it is safe to say that [no library] anywhere has more an atmosphere of its own, that none is more conducive to intellectual aspiration and spiritual peace." The building was designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1966.
